Hex Hives stands out from typical plastic products by letting users choose their material. In 3D printing, there are many materials beyond just plastics, like Fillamentum's eco-friendly nonoilen filament (use code "HEXHIVES20" for 20% off). It's up to you to pick, allowing for greener choices! Painting the outside of the hives is always an option to preserve your hive from degradation.

Hex Hives print their own insulation by creating air pockets in the external walls. The size of the air pockets are decided by users in the printer settings (we will provide our settings in our Quickstart PDF guide).

Here is a nice study of the insulating properties of PETG 3D printed walls with various printer settings. It’s shows that insulation values of 3D printed walls can be better than that of wood. All of the cold weather techniques used for standard hives apply for Hex Hives.

We advise using a food-safe material like PETG for printing the hive due to its notable UV resistance. For the internal honey frames, PLA is a good choice given its food-safe properties, though it has limited UV resistance. Fillamentum offers an exceptional nonoilen filament - use the code "HEXHIVES20" for a 20% discount. Additionally, we suggest coating all honey foundations with beeswax. This not only attracts bees but also acts as a barrier between the plastics and the honey.

We're currently optimizing Hex Hives to fit various printer sizes. If you don't find a match for your specific printer, select the closest build volume and adjust the scale as needed
